Are digestive enzymes for you?

What is Digest Support?

Digest Support is an enzyme supplement that helps aide in digestion. An enzyme is a substance that the body produces that acts as a catalyst – which means it speeds up a chemical reaction in the body. The supplement combines several types of enzymes that include a proprietary blend of Ox Bile Extract, DPPIV, Amylase and others as well. It speeds up the chemical reactions that help you digest food and absorb the nutrients.

What conditions could digest support improve?

Digest support could help any number of digestive conditions such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease and diarrhea or constipation. It is not limited to digestive conditions though – because the gut microbiome (the bacteria in your digestive tract) is so closely connected to the brain through the HPA axis, facilitating a health microbiome could also help cognitive or brain difficulties.
Nutrient deficiencies could also be helped with digestive enzymes, because a nutrient deficiency could be a sign that nutrients are not being absorbed well from food. Due to our current agricultural practices, the nutrient density of foods, even many organic vegetables lack the rich assortment of nutrients that existed decades ago. As we are all faced with this unfortunate challenge, it becomes even more important to ensure that what nutrients are left in our food, get into our body. Food was designed to be “natures multivitamin” as a complete diet can provide hundreds of different nutrients. This means that the potential implications of increasing nutrient absorption are beneficial for almost all bodily systems. For example, the increased absorption of Vitamin D and Calcium from foods can be significant for bone health and reduce potential for Osteoporosis as aging sets in.
A healthy gut microbiome, as mentioned earlier, has implications throughout the whole body. Because of this, it is important to protect the integrity of the microbiome. The enzyme protease helps digest proteins that would normally be difficult to digest and could disrupt the integrity of the microbiome. Protease is just one of the beneficial enzymes in Digest Support.
DPPIV is another enzyme in Digest Support that is a big deal for gluten-sensitive individuals. DPPIV is one of the best enzymes clinically for breaking down gluten – which the body virtually can’t do in its own capacity – as well as casein. Casein is the protein in dairy that can also be hard to digest in certain populations, and can be inflammatory. While this supplement cannot replace a gluten and dairy free diet, it can be taken in conjunction to minimize effects of trace amounts that may linger in certain foods.
Ox Bile Extract is clinically significant for gallbladder dysfunction as well as people who have had their gallbladders removed. The gallbladder produces a substance called bile that is sent into the digestive tract to help digest fats. Lack of bile is not life threatening, but can lead to indigestion and sometimes bloating. A lack of bile production can be somewhat remedied by this extract that is found in Digest Support.
Digest Support contains a powerful combination of digestive enzymes to take the strain off of our already taxed digestive system that can help with certain conditions like gluten intolerance or can be part of an optimized diet to extract maximum nutrients from foods. Though this supplement packs a powerful blend, it should serve as just that, a supplement. You should do your best to begin focusing on other lifestyle components of digestion such as sitting down for meals, not eating when you are stressed, taking a brief walk after a meal or drinking some bitters/citrus before a meal to stimulate digestion.
